Post museum
The Baroque-style stable built in the courtyard of the Hunyady estate at Balatonszemes in the last quarter of the 18th century has been housing the exhibitions of the Post Museum since 1962. The Foundation for the Museums of Communication had the state-owned property renovated in 2003 and 2004 and it also built a barn to house the carriages, cars and the mobile-post coach. The fine courtyard is a fitting setting for the communication monument sculpted by Ferenc Trischler. This memorial, unique in Europe, commemorates those post, telecommunication and broadcasting workers who died while fulfilling their communication duty in the far and recent past. The new permanent exhibition accommodated in the former stable building entitled "From the stage-coach to the mail van" presents some fine exhibits of the vehicle collection of the Post Museum. Besides giving an insight into the history of the building itself, the exhibition illustrates the history of postal transportation from the 15th century cart to the engine-driven mail van of recent times.
The original models and the replicas displayed in the centuries-old stable and in the barn built on the lines of the traditional arcaded barns of Transdanubia, the figures dressed in contemporary postmen's uniforms, the framed documents, photos and maps on the walls all invite the visitor on a time journey into the past history of the post.
