A collection of administrative and operational memories

 

The collection of administrative and operational memorabilia preserves the tools and objects that are essential to general postal services and postal operations in the general sense.


Such are the equipment, furniture and security devices of post offices and post offices. This includes typical objects such as the post horn used at the post office in previous centuries, weapons, horse tools and treasure chests. Within the collection, the largest proportion of objects that can be regarded as working tools are related to the provision of the postal service, the post office, recording, processing and delivery activities, such as the change box, stamp pad, stamp holder, stationery, bundling tools, letter and package scales, delivery bags, as well as coat of arms and letter boxes. Here, we keep the mechanized tools of office work, the so-called small handling machines and automatons, and all such tools and objects that represent the post office due to their purpose or as a result of habits developed in administrative and operational practice.

Vehicle collection

 

This is the smallest collection of postal history, the scope of which includes vehicles used in postal, telecommunications and broadcasting services. In addition to the original vehicles, their reconstructions and technical models can also be found here. The earliest are the captured mail vehicles - almost a dozen - most of which were added to the museum shortly after the Second World War. Experimental postal vehicles used at the turn of the century, as well as motorcycles from the 1950s and 1960s, came into the museum's possession by purchase from private collectors. Currently, the collection grows by 2-3 pieces per year through official handover or collection. We have off-road models and scale models made of vehicles that can no longer be found. With the exception of handcarts, our vehicles are at the service of the public at our showrooms in Budapest and in the countryside - Balatonszemes, Nagyvázsony, Ópusztaszer.

A collection of uniforms, flags, armbands and other textiles

 

The collection of uniforms, flags, armbands, and other textiles includes the uniforms and clothing items of the postal service employees, which vary from era to era, from hats to footwear. Most of the items are a complete postal uniform or some of its parts or accessories, such as the armband. The oldest and most feared piece of our textile collection is the imperial postman's uniform from the first third of the 19th century. Most of our original works of art are from the period after the Second World War. The collection covers not only the original pieces, but also their reconstructions. The uniforms of the recent past came to the museum from the postal services. Here we also keep the various mail bags used by the postal service, which vary from age to age. The embroidered silk flags of postal social organizations and associations stand out with their beauty.

Collection of stamps, seals and medals

 

The core material of the collection consists of stamps and seal presses used in the postal service. The earliest, the unique, homemade, so-called forerunner stamps, which were used between 1750 and 1850. These are location stamps, which were used to indicate the place of dispatch on the consignments. The rarities of the collection are the oriental stamps with insert numbers, in which the date is engraved on small replaceable columns. The predominant part of the collection is the wheel-system place-orientation stamp used from the 90s of the 19th century.


Another important group of the collection is the engraved copper seal presses. According to their purpose, rubber stamps are document stamps, which are used by post offices, postal agencies, professional or social organizations, and associations.


The collection includes commemorative medals and plaques issued in connection with all branches of the postal service, its development, technical equipment, and events. This collection also preserves telecommunication coins (tantus) related to the postal service, various association and service badges, badges, and awards given to postal, telecommunications and broadcasting workers.

The collection of personal, social and vocational education memories includes material memories of social events, events and organized movements related to the activities of the post office. Here you can find tangible memories of exemplary persons who played an outstanding role in the postal service, vocational education and the social life of postal workers, as well as the social, cultural and sports organizations and associations of postal workers. This collection preserves the tools and equipment of postal educational institutions, vocational education and training. Last but not least, the tangible memories of postal, telecommunications and broadcasting advertising and marketing activities also enrich this collection group.

Its scope of collection covers the entire range of optical, wired and wireless telegraphs, their technical equipment, components, equipment, accessories and related material auxiliary equipment, power supplies, energy sources, signal and energy carriers. In addition to the telegraph network of the post office, the collection covers the memories of the technical and organizational development of other state-owned and private telegraph networks and telegraph equipment, such as the telegraph networks of domestic railway companies, the telex networks, and the toolbox of optical telecommunications and signaling systems used in border areas in road and water transport.
