The Várközpont - the first machine-switched, automatic telephone exchange - was put into operation in 1928 as an extension of "Kristina". The rotary 7A1 type telephone exchange, which was expanded several times, was in operation until November 1985, after which it was preserved in its original location in working condition as a historical monument of telecommunications. In 1991, on the 110th anniversary of the beginning of the Hungarian telephone, the first exhibition of the Telefónia Múzeum opened on its premises. The new permanent exhibition entitled "From the noise tree to the World Wide Web" will be open to visitors from May 17, 2000.
